Doris Dolleh

Doris' Story

Doris is 19.  She and her sister, Grace, have Lost both of their parents. Their father was killed by rebels in the Liberian war in 1996 and their mother is missing. The girls were living in a refugee camp in the south of Guinea before the Red Cross found their uncle living in Conakry and sent them to live with him. However, their uncle has been unable to care for them by paying their school fees and providing them with a safe place to live. The girls have nowhere to sleep in the house so they sleep on the living room floor or outside and often struggle to find food. They often stay out late at night until they can come back to the house and find their place to sleep. Living conditions are very difficult for them here but they have no choice but to stay there.  Doris sells charcoal on the streets after school to get money to pay their school fees.

“I love to sing and listen to gospel music.”

Today ...

Doris and her elder sister Grace were living in particularly difficult and unsafe circumstances. They were given places in the FCRS-funded “safe house” and moved in at the beginning of 2008.

Doris:  Assistance from FCRS has made a good change in our lives.  Now there is no more concern about tuition payment, uniforms, books, bags and shoes which before it was hard to get from our uncle.  Before moving into the safe house we were living under great fear and maltreatment.  But now all that has changed.  We now have total peace, enough food, care, a happy and quiet home and - most of all – caring sponsors.
